Obituary for Mary Lou Handley

Mary Lou Ransom Handley entered the kingdom of heaven on Thursday, January 17, 2019. She was a resident of Van Alstyne. She was born on October 23, 1932 in Walla Walla, Washington to Kenneth and Geneva Ransom. She was the second of four children.
Mary met and married Robert Lee Handley shortly after he returned from service in WWII. During their early years of marriage, they purchased and operated a Dude Ranch in the mountains of Idaho. This was probably some of their happiest times. The next chapter of their lives found them settled in the Rio Grand Valley of Texas where they spent the next forty years.
In 1968 Mary returned to college in pursuit of a degree in education. Thereafter, she spent most of the following 30 years teaching, mostly in the Harlingen ISD. She loved her students so much. She was always given the so called “problem children”, yet by the end of the school year, they tested out on top every year, without fail, mostly due to her love for, belief in, and devotion to them. While teaching, she obtained her master’s degree, graduating in 1980. She also taught Sunday school classes for many years and served as a scout leader. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Handley, son, Robert Ransom Handley, father, Kenneth Ransom, mother, Geneva, brother, Creig Ransom, sister, June Ransom Krig, sister, Susan K. Cheney: mother in law, Hysa Belford Alton, grandparents and numerous aunts & uncles.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Lee Handley (Ron), Patience Traughber (Zan) and Margo Handley Harding (Dale); sisters, Ellen Lees, Virginia Casbeer, (JT), Lahoma Horn and Georgia Ashworth, and brother in law, Harrison (Janis). Mary is also survived by grandchildren, Heidi Cecil, Bryan McCollum, Shane Handley Garton, Joshua C. Garton (Stephanie), Travis C. Garton (Jackie), Heather Luckey (Jeffery) Hillary H. Bailey (Justin), Holly R. Handley, Marshall Handley Harding (Kayli), Nicholas G. Harding. She is also survived by 24 great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Scoggins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Van Alstyne Cemetery. A family and friends gathering will be held on Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
